What to Bring

What to Bring

Passport

With Shenzhen being just a cheap fight away from a lot of international travel destinations, your passport pages are ikely to get stamped up real quick. That coupled with the fact that most work visas are only good for a year means you're ikely to burn trough pages pretty as.If you plan to live in China for a number of years and are getting a new or renewed passport before applying for your Chinese visa, it is recommended to fork over some extra cash for additinal pages, if your home country provides that option.

Certifications

By the time the visa processis completed, your employer should have provided a ist of the specific documents you will need to prove whatever credentials are necessary to complete your paperwork once on the mainland. Depending on your field of work, you will most likely need the original copy of your college diploma and whatever certificates will be necessary for your job, such as a TESL certificate for an English teaching job,and quality copies of your transcripts, non-criminal record background check repot and medical check. Also, don't forget to bring along your driver's license if you plan to drive in China (please refer to page 61 for details on how to rent a car and drive in China).

Smartphone

If you're one of the five people stil rocking a flp-phone back home, it's definitely time to drop some money or a decent smartphone. Most new devices wil have no problem working with China's major 4G LTE carrers, but before forking over the dough,do a quick scan of the specs page to make sure your selection is comp the bands below.

China Mobile: Band 39, 40 and 41

China Unicom/ China Telecom: Band 3, 40 and 41

Money

As itwill probably be a matter of days or weeks before you get a bank account set up and start receiving a salary, you should come with a supply of Yuan notes and an internationally accepted credit card to pay for basic necessitis like food, accommodations and transport.

Discover has a deal with China's major card service UnionPay,allowing Discover cards to be accepted anywhere Chinese UnionPay cards can be used with no foreign transaction fees. You can also use a Discover card to get a cash advance from any UnionPay ATM without incurring a foreign transaction fee. Most hotels wil accept Visa, MasterCard,American Express, etc. but whether or not you get hit with a foreign transaction fee will depend on the specifics of your card, so be sure to check with your bank before you get on the plane.

Some banks also have arrangements with Chinese"sister banks," allowing you to withdraw cash without incurring a fee, but thisis bank-specifi,so ask your bank before youleave. It's also a good idea to let your bank or credit card company know your travel plans before coming so they don't freeze your card due to what could be flagged as suspicious activity.

Comforts from home

You can find a lot of imported goods in Shenzhen, whether through online marketplaces like Taobao, Alibaba and Nogogo,or brick-and-mortar international supermarkets like Metro, Carrefour,BLT, Wal-Mart or smaller specilty shops, but you probably won't find the same variety you are accustomed to at home and whatever you can find will have a slight mark up in price. Products like specialty chocolates, candies, cereals, coffee, wine, etc are considered luxury import products, which China taxes heavily. However, many domestic brands have been stepping up their game in these markets, so withalitl exploration, and some trial and err,it's possible to find some real gems at decent prices.
