Karuna Rescue is Shenzhen' s largest foreign-run, non-profit, private animal welfare organization. I have been involved with and supporting Karuna Rescue since before they had a physical shelter.
Opportunities to work outdoors with animals are definitely hard to find in cities, and going to the shelter gets you out of the hustle-and-bustle of central Shenzhen. It is located in a forested area in northern Xiii.
Originally a small group of volunteers spontaneously responding to animal rescue situations in Shenzhen and other parts of South China, Karuna Rescue now focuses on extracting dogs from the illegal dog meat trade and other inhumane situations, rehabilitating them, and then placing them in forever homes overseas.
Karuna Rescue is always in need of volunteers who can help raise funds for vet bills, dog supplies and shelter rent; social media advocates who can help find adopters, fosters and flight volunteers; and kind Shenzheners who would like to visit the shelter and socialize the dogs.
Getting to know the founders and other volunteers has also been one of the best experiences I've had in Shenzhen. Their dedication is motivating.
Karuna Rescue was founded in 2017 by Sachin Patel and Jenny Coulson after they became involved in the large-scale rescue of 121 dogs from the Yulin Litchi and Dog Meat Festival. The following year, they rescued 77 more dogs from a Changzhi dog meat festival in addition to responding to local animal emergencies in Shenzhen.
